A Word
on Compounds from U.S. Products Co.
Our paste type compounds have an oil-soap base or vehicle that holds
the abrasive in suspension and allows lapped parts to be readily
cleaned with the usual solvents.
These compounds are sensitive to temperature and should be stored
in a cool place. They should not be placed on a radiator, exposed
to direct sunlight, or stored in a place with higher than normal
temperatures.
Age improves the lapping quality of the base or vehicle. Time seems
to change the chemical structure of the base and a film of old compound
on a lapping plate is an improvement over new or fresh compound.
For special or unusual lapping operations we age our compounds.
Some customers purchase an excess amount and store it for a number
of months prior to its use. Another customer actually heats or cooks
our compound before using it while another stores the compound in
a household refrigerator and will use it only when cold. All these
methods seem to work well for these specific customers and their
unusual lapping operations.
Many grades of compounds are formulated that are not shown on our
list. These have been developed by us to meet specific conditions
or requirements. Special lapping operations sometimes require special
compounds combined with special lapping techniques. Many polishing
operations can be best performed using fine abrasives and "Pellon
Pads." These cloth or composition pads have an adhesive back and
can be placed on hand or machine lapping plates.
After some years of research and development we have available both
Diamond and Borazon™ CBN lapping pastes and slurries. The many rules
of thumb that apply to standard abrasive compounds also apply to
these super abrasive compounds in the lapping process. However,
there are differences and we are now publishing technical data that
specifically outlines the "how to" of lapping and polishing with
super-abrasives--Diamond and Borazon™ CBN.
We welcome the opportunity to share with you our knowledge and experience
gained in 75 years of producing lapping or grinding compounds. Our
compounds will not solve every lapping problem, but we firmly believe
that they will solve the majority of problems encountered in today's
lapping operations.
Our standard size containers are available for your immediate use,
or we will package our compounds in your selected containers and
allow your company to do its own special labeling.
We have many compounds for all kinds of valves, taper or plug, safety
relief, pressure, control, etc. We can supply compounds for lapping
gears of all types, sizes and metals, from the large industrial
and turbine gears to the tiny gears in computing devices. We can
formulate for your shop, special compounds containing specified
grit sizes to satisfy your individual shop conditions. 75 years
of studying lapping problems and the formulation of many special
compounds has given us a wide experience for solving all kinds of
unusual lapping problems.
